Street project improves safety near Fairhaven Branch Library

Safety improvements underway on the streets near the Fairhaven Branch Library may cause minor travel disruptions in the weeks ahead. There may be temporary lane revisions, street closures and on-street parking restrictions in the area throughout the project.

The street construction is at 12th Street and Mill Avenue. The project includes removal of a portion of 12th Street north of Mill Avenue and construction of a new connection from Finnegan Way to 12th Street. (Photos below show progression of preparation work where the new street connection will be located.)

This planned new alignment creates a more standard four-way intersection instead of the current five-way intersection of 12th Street, Finnegan Way and Mill Avenue. It is expected to improve traffic and pedestrian safety and provide additional green space in front of the Fairhaven Branch Library through a small expansion of the existing park.

The Fairhaven Branch Library will remain open usual operating hours during the project, which is expected to be complete by September 2017.
