Library closed Dec. 3 and Jan. 2 for staff training

As the Bellingham Public Library prepares for a significant software system change, all library locations will be closed on Monday, December 3, 2018, and Wednesday, January 2, 2019, for staff training.

Library director Rebecca Judd said she joins the library Board of Trustees and library staff in apologizing for the inconvenience of being closed two additional weekdays during the months ahead.

Judd said these focused days for staff training are a necessary step in replacing the library’s Integrated Library System (ILS), the software used to keep records on library collections and circulations and maintain patron accounts.

She said on the two staff training closure days:

  • All Bellingham Public Library locations will be closed, and all regular programs, events and volunteer service will be cancelled.
  • Fines will not accrue, materials checked out won’t be due, and holds will not expire.
  • All online and digital services are expected to be available as usual.

“The ILS replacement is one of our most significant projects this year,” Judd said. “While patrons will notice few outward impacts of this system change when we complete it in early January, it is an essential tool that staff use for almost everything we do. These staff training days are important to help us ensure a smooth transition to our new system.”

The library Board of Trustees approved the two closure days at its September 18, 2018, regular meeting.
