*Bunko Mothers are Japanese mothers who have established small libraries in their suburban area homes to create and maintain a stimulating reading environment for neighborhood children.

As Mrs. Sampson and her 4th/5th grade at Columbia Elementary School in Bellingham
 listen attentively, Nina Talbot and Nadia Ponkratova (both Russian immigrants now attending Whatcom Community College) read Mabela the Clever in Russian. Sandy turns book pages in the English version.
