Whatcom READS! Events - Join the Discussion!
For the 4th Annual Whatcom READS! program, happening now through February 2012, we're encouraging everyone in Whatcom County to read Elizabeth George's mystery novel, "In the Presence of the Enemy". Then, plan on attending one or more programs related to the book -- from book discussions to murder mystery events to presentations by the Bellingham Police Department about cold cases, crime scene investigation, and working with K-9 dogs to solve crimes.
Readers who like puzzles will want to stop by the Central Library once a week starting January 14, 2012 to pick up clues that will lead them to "evidence" hidden in the library. The "evidence" can be used to solve a "who done it" rebus puzzle, which will qualify them to enter in a drawing to win a copy of Elizabeth George's newest book.
Whatcom READS! is offering several events of interest to aspiring writers: on January 12, we'll host a Mystery Writers Panel Discussion featuring popular mystery authors Pamela Beason, Jo Dereske, and Robert Lopresti. They'll talk about what it takes to craft a well-paced mystery that will keep reader's guessing until the final pages. On February 12, winners of the Whatcom WRITES! contest will read their entries at Village Books. Then, on February 22, Elizabeth George will discuss "The Art and Craft of Writing" at Western Washington University. George's nonfiction book, "Write Away" about her writing process will be the basis for her talk.
As in previous years, our featured author will be giving several public presentations to cap off the Whatcom READS! experience. Elizabeth George will speak February 21 at the Blaine Performing Arts Center and February 23 at Whatcom Community College's Syre Center.
