Tom Barrett Named New Bellingham Public Library Trustee
The Bellingham City Council approved Mayor Kelli Linville's recommendation on March 10, 2014 of Thomas J. Barrett as the newest trustee for the Bellingham Public Library.
Mr. Barrett has a long history of service to the city. Tom served two terms on the City of Bellingham Planning and Development Commission, four years as Chair. He also served two terms on the Parks Board and as the Parks Board liaison to the Greenway Advisory Committee. Library Board members who interviewed Tom were impressed by his extensive city service, including as former President and board member of the Samish Neighborhood Association, and as a representative to the Mayor's Neighborhood Advisory Council.
Tom holds M.B.A. and M.Ed. degrees, and has work experience as a law firm Business Manager; he also has a lifelong love for public libraries.
Tom joins Faye Hill, J. Gordon, Rachel Myers, and Marilyn Mastor on the Board of Trustees.
The Bellingham Public Library Board of Trustees is the governing and policy-setting board for the library and includes five members. The Board of Trustees is one of the city's "boards and commissions"; board candidates indicate their interest in serving by filling out an application through the Mayor's Office. Citizen volunteers are interviewed by the board and the Mayor, and approved by the City Council. Each term is for five years.
