LIBRARY FRIENDS ANNOUNCE SCHOLARSHIP

High school juniors who live in Bellingham can enter a contest to win a $500 scholarship, courtesy of the Friends of the Bellingham Public Library. The prize is intended for use towards educational expenses after high school – for admissions fees or textbooks, for example. The winner will also be able to use the recognition to enhance his or her college applications.

Applicants will submit a typed, original essay of approximately 500 words describing how libraries have influenced their lives, along with a completed application form, by March 1, 2012.

The Friends of the Library hope the contest will raise teens’ awareness about the importance of public libraries, and remind them of how libraries can play a role in lifelong learning. With numerous college and career planning books, and the Learning Express online test-prep program which offers practice PSAT, SAT, ACT and AP tests, Bellingham Public Library has a lot to offer students who wish to pursue higher education.

The winner will be announced at the Friends of the Bellingham Public Library Annual Meeting on Saturday, April 28. “We hope the essays will provide the library with poignant feed-back from a targeted group of patrons, and will encourage students to consider the library as a partner in their educational process,” said members of the Scholarship Committee.

Details about the scholarship, including application forms, can be found on the Bellingham Public Library website (www.bellinghampubliclibrary.org) under Friends of the Library.
