Bellingham Public Library to Re-Open on Sundays in February

Beginning on Super Bowl Sunday, February 2, 2014, the Bellingham Public Library will "kick-off" Sunday hours for the public at the Central Library, 210 Central Avenue. Hours on Sundays will be 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. As in the past, Sunday hours are restored during the school year only, closing again on Sundays during the summer.

City Council member Stan Snapp presented the budget modification and the City Council voted on December 9 to amend its 2014 budget to include funds for restoring library Sunday hours. Snapp has been the Council Liaison to the Library Board of Trustees for three years, and has witnessed the devastating effects of recent budget cuts on library operations. "Sundays were always the best day for families, but with cutbacks in staff we haven't been able to be open for the past four years. We think the community will be thrilled", Snapp stated.

The library reduced their open hours by twenty-eight hours in the fall of 2009; with this recent restoration, the library has managed to add back a total of eight hours: four at Barkley Branch Library in November, 2011 and four at the Central Library in 2014. "We have a long way to go, but this is a great start", said Library Director Pam Kiesner.

The library will provide a basic level of service and will not include special programs on Sundays or delivery and pick-up of library materials.
